barbary sheep Hunting In Croatia
barbary sheep hunting croatia 🇭🇷
from start to finish

before the hunt
For barbary sheep hunting you should plan for atleast 3 to 4 days depending on your preferences and pace. The hunt takes place on Mosor mountain, just above Split on the Adriatic coast.
If you arrive in Croatia, the best option is to land at Split Airport. From there it takes about 30 to 40 minutes by car to reach the accommodation. The drive already offers impressive views of the Dalmatian coast and the dramatic slopes of Mosor.
Barbary sheep can be hunted year-round, but the best period is in October and November, during the rutting season, when rams are more active and easier to locate.

DAY 1
Upon arrival at Split Airport you will be greeted and transferred to the accommodation near the hunting ground. After check-in and settling into your rooms, we head to the shooting range. Normally we practice at 100 to 200 meters, to make sure every hunter is comfortable with the rifle setup, optics, and the typical distances of this hunt. It is also useful to train shooting uphill and downhill, as the terrain of Mosor often requires angled shots.
This is also the moment to discuss hunting strategies. The main method is spot-and-stalk, which means carefully glassing the mountain slopes until the right ram is spotted. For hunters who may not be able to walk long distances or climb, it is possible to hunt from natural stone blinds that are well integrated into the rocky landscape.
In the evening, we enjoy a traditional Dalmatian dinner with fresh fish, lamb, or wild game, accompanied by local wines. Around the table, the plan for the next days is reviewed, and everyone gets into the spirit of the adventure.

DAY 2 & 3
Hunting days start early, with guides taking hunters into the mountains at first light. Mosor’s terrain is a combination of rocky slopes, cliffs, and Mediterranean vegetation.
The hunt typically begins by glassing from roads and vantage points with binoculars and spotting scopes. Once a suitable ram is located and judged by size, the group keeps track of the animals until they bed down. At that point, the stalk begins. Accompanied by an experienced local guide, hunters carefully approach, using terrain for cover, with the goal of closing the distance to 100–150 meters.
Sometimes, depending on the situation, a shot may need to be taken from farther away – up to 300 meters – and hunters should be prepared for angled shooting both uphill and downhill.
For those hunting from blinds, guides will position hunters in the afternoon and wait for the sheep to appear, blending seamlessly into the stone structures of the mountain.

AFTER THE HUNT
After the hunt is successfully completed, the focus shifts to celebrating the achievement and preparing the trophies.
If the hunter wishes to take the trophy back immediately, all the necessary papers and documentation for transport will be provided. For European hunters, CITES is not required, and the trophy certificate can be issued a few hours after the hunt is completed (once the points are evaluated according to CIC). Alternatively, the hunter may choose to have the trophy sent to our taxidermist. Once the euro mount or taxidermy is completed, the finished trophy can be shipped directly to the hunter’s address. If the trophy is being exported to another country, CITES is required for barbary sheep. This permit can take up to two months to obtain, after which the trophy will be sent directly to the hunter’s address.
As a special experience, it is possible to arrange a private chef who will prepare the meat of your freshly harvested barbary sheep. This unique culinary moment allows hunters to enjoy the flavor of their trophy in authentic Mediterranean style, right after the hunt.
The last day is usually spent enjoying local cuisine, sharing stories around the fireplace or terrace, and relaxing after days in the mountains.
Most hunters choose to stay a little longer in Split after the hunt. The city offers a perfect mix of history and leisure: Diocletian’s Palace, narrow stone streets, seaside restaurants, and lively cafés. It is also easy to take a short trip to nearby islands or coastal towns for an extended holiday.
